My Baby Kitty

In loving memory of our Penny who we love so much. Penny will be greatly missed and be in our hearts forever. We got Penny in April 1992 when she was about 12 weeks old. We went to the Denver Dumb Friends League and I was looking around and saw three little orange kittens in one of the top cages. Two with little blue collars to let you know they were boys and one with a pink collar for a little girl. The boys were pretty quiet and clam, but the girl was very playful and that drew me to her. She was crying to me and to play with my finger from the cage. She would grab at it with her paw then try to bite it. It was love at first sight. I knew right then I had to have her. I got my parents attention and told them she was the one I wanted. They said ok and a short while later we were on our way home. She cried all the way home. Not too happy with the car ride and I am sure being in a cardboard box wasn’t helping either. I couldn’t resist any longer, I had to take her out and hold her. She still didn’t really quiet down, but I didn’t care, she was mine.

Rithing on the stairs

We didn’t really have a name picked out yet. We were driving home from dinner or somewhere and we started throwing names back and forth. We had had a black cat named Midnight who died April 3, 1991. We figured we would try to be creative and do the opposite of that, but names like “Afternoon” and “Morning” were just not working out. Then out of nowhere, Chris shouted out Penny. Since she was orange it fit pretty well. Also, one of my favorite TV shows at the time (and still is today) was MacGyver. There was a character named Penny Parker. That was kind of a nickname for her, but for the most part she was just Penny.

Bathing by flowers

Being a cat, of course she was very curious and always wanted to get into everything. One day I was filling the bath tub and Penny decided to get a closer look. She jumped up on the toilet and looked in but that wasn’t close enough, so she decided to take a walk and balance herself around the edge of the old fashioned claw foot tub. As she got to the wall where the tub was snug against, she ran into the various kinds of shampoo bottles and other bath goodies. As she tried to turn around, she found there was not enough room the hard way and fell right in the water. Luckily, I was not in it. She jumped out and ran to the living room like a bullet from a gun. She was absolutely drenched and after a few hours of her cleaning herself, she was dry and very soft. This happened a few times. Only twice were there people in the tub when she fell in, once with Chris and once with dad. Thankfully nobody was hurt. After this happened about 5 times she finally learned her lesson.

Penny was an excellent mouser. One night, I was in my room playing video games at about two in the morning. I heard Penny come up the stairs and I didn’t think too much about it. During a pause in the game, I turned around to find Penny with a mouse in her mouth gasping for air. She had brought it upstairs as if to say “mommy, mommy, look what I caught!” I told her to take it back downstairs because I didn’t want it in my room if it got away somehow. She did what she was told and took right into the living room. I followed her down and woke mom up to show her Penny had caught another mouse. Sugar got up with her. Since it was summer time, we had our fans out, but usually took them out of the window at night. Penny let the mouse out of her mouth and he took off and hid right under the fan that was by the couch on the floor. Sugar saw this and ran after it barking her head off. At this point Penny lost interest because Sugar was being too loud and not stealthy like she would be. I finally go tired of Sugar’s endless barking and moved the fan. Penny saw her chance and pounced on it, held it down and Sugar came along and shook the life out of it.

Who me get off this table? No way!

More to come...
