Macey brought joy to the life of everyone he encountered. On car rides, kids (and grown-ups) would stare and laugh as he hung his head out the window and his jowls flapped wildly in the wind. You couldn't walk around the block without someone stopping to pet him or comment on "what a gorgeous dog" he was.
He was big and powerful, that's for sure, but it always made us laugh when people were intimidated by him. If they only knew...! Macey was the true embodiment of a gentle giant. He was a lover, not a fighter...even when the cats swatted at his tail and antagonized him around the house. He was a giant teddy bear...a sweet, gentle soul who just wanted to be wherever his humans were.
We learned a lot from Macey. He was, after all, an incredibly smart dog. We learned that there's no need to rush a walk on a pretty day and that there's always time to stop and smell the roses (or pee on them). We learned the true meanings of loyalty, patience, tolerance and unconditional love.
There are so many things we'll miss about Macey; some obvious, some not so much. We'll miss cleaning up the endless trails of slobber he always left behind him. We'll miss seeing the excitement on his face when he realized we were going for a hike or when he smelled the ocean air as we neared the beach--his favorite place on earth. We'll miss watching him charge the waves and dig hole after hole in the sand. We'll miss his incessant begging for pizza crust and cheese (he's quite possibly the only dog to ever beg for gorgonzola). We'll miss the ever-present tennis balls that brought him so much joy.
But most of all, we'll miss his gentleness, his companionship and his love. He was our protector and our friend and he will forever live on in our memories and our hearts.
